What Is a Habitat? A habitat is the area where a plant or animal lives. It includes: food, water, shelter, space, and temperature.                                         A forest may be a habitat for a moose, whereas a beaver pond may be the habitat for a trout, and a dead tree trunk may be the habitat for a fungus, or a beetle. Habitats can be different sizes.

Grade 4 Summer Math IdeasMultiplication WarDeal out all the cards equally between 2 or 3 players. Each player turns over 2 cards and multiplies the numbers together. The person with the higher product wins the pile of cards. If you have the same product repeat the procedure. Winner takes all the cards.Close to 1000Deal 8 cards to each player. Use any 6 of your cards to make two 3-digit numbers. Try to get a sum that is close to or equal to 1000. Write these 2 numbers in your journal. Your score is the difference between your number and 1000.Example: Your eight cards are 1, 5, 4, 3, 1, 8, 3, 8 You can combine 148 + 853 + 1001. Your score is 1 since the difference between 1001 and 1000 is 1. Discard the 6 used cards and pick 6 new cards. Take a tour through time with the grade 4D students at Harkins Elementary as they travel back in time to tell about the historical relevance of 5 of Newcastle's buildings. The tour includes St. James and St. John Church, Harkins Academy, St. Mary's Academy, Dr. DeOlloqui's Residence, and The Old Northumberland County Courthouse. Please check out our video. What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic? Newcastle is really historical. It has a lot of old buildings. What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians? It is a lot of work to do when you want to learn about history. Lots of important things weren’t written down so you have to ask people questions. How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project? Life was not the same as it is today. They didn’t have the same technology. Most of the houses were made of wood. Also, people were more likely to get sick.   http://canadashistory.ca/Kids/YoungCitizens/Profiles/2012/Emily-D.aspx

June Newsletter 4D June 4-7   Math Assessment Please make sure your child continues to study their Math Facts and Strategies every night.  There will be 3 components of this assessment.  First will be the basic facts.  It is composed of 3 multiplication, 3 division, 3 addition, and 3 subtraction questions.  Students will have 1 minute to write the answers to all 12 questions. The second part will be Mental Math.  Students will not be timed on this section, but will have to explain their strategy.  Finally, students will be asked to solve equations and find the answers for questions on the strands covered in Math this year such as Geometry, Patterns and Equations, Measurement, etc.  Please make sure your child is well rested, has a white eraser and a pencil. June 8 We are going Geocaching at the Cove!  Students will be walking to the Eco Center where we will be dividing into groups to search for clues.  We will have our snack before we go, and eat our lunch at the Eco Center.  Please send in $4.00 to cover the cost of lunch.  I am also looking for Parent Volunteers.  So, if you are available that day, please send in a note with your child on Monday or Tuesday.  I look forward to seeing you:)

February 3, 2012           Grade 4D Class News From the fourth grade classroom of Mrs. Donovan ~ Emily and Emma   Highlights This week was another busy week!  On Wednesday we had a snow day!  We also finished up Unit 4 in Math and began Unit 5 on Fractions and Decimals.  Although this is a new concept for many students, everyone realized that we use fractions all the time in real life.  Fractions are used in money, time, and even when we eat dinner.  As well, students have been reading a lot this week.  Remember, you only need to fill out one log – just the Timberwolf Challenge Log. Next week we will begin French Immersion with Mrs. Hale!                   ~Mrs. Donovan   M Tu W Th Fr     1 2 3 6 7 8 9 Spelling Test 13 Valentine’s Day/ Jonathan 15 16 Spelling Test Shania 21 22 23 Spelling Test 27 28 29   Spelling Test “I want that one!” Reading should be a choice, not a chore.
