Science Fair Projects 2014 Due – Tuesday, March 18, 2014 It is Science Fair Project time!  Students have been working in class to prepare for the Science Fair.  Although they are very excited, they need a lot of support to complete a project of this size.  I have provided all of the necessary information for the project itself.  Also, I have researched and printed out all of the information they need to complete their project.  However, the poster boards are to be completed at home.  The District Fair has been moved forward by two weeks this year, leaving us short on class time.  Therefore, students are to complete the poster board on their own time.  As well, they are to bring all materials required to complete the project by Tuesday.  It is very important that students complete the experiment 3 – 5 times prior to the Science Fair to make sure that their results are accurate and the data they have collected is measurable.                                                                      Thank you so much for your help,                                                                                                             Mrs. Donovan

Math Help Students in Grades 4 and 5 are being offered extra Math help on Monday nights after school from 3:00 – 4:00.  Mr. Flynn will be reviewing basic addition and subtraction strategies, as well as introducing and reinforcing strategies for multiplication and division.  This is not homework help, but an extra support to help your child succeed in Math.  Please send a note on the day of; informing us who will be picking your child up from the school that day. Homework help is offered four days per week during Mathletics.  Students are to attempt their homework at home first, and then bring any questions or concerns to my attention during Mathletics class at school.  Please keep the homework sheets in the homework binder so that I can review it with your child at school. Also, Ms. Corney offers homework help during lunch period to grade 4 and 5 every week.  Students are to bring a bagged lunch and join her for lunch.  Every Friday is game day!  Students participate in a variety of Math games to help reinforce the concepts covered in class.

Master 3.6 To Parents and Adults at Home… Your child’s class is starting a mathematics unit on multiplication and division.  Multiplication and division are basic computational skills that children will use often, and skills that children must master to succeed in higher levels of mathematics. The focus of this unit is on developing strategies for multiplying and dividing with whole numbers. Children will identify patterns on multiplication charts, use mental math, and pose and solve problems. In this unit, your child will: ·        Use different mental math strategies to multiply and divide. ·        Multiply by 0, 1, and 10. ·        Divide by 1. ·        Recall multiplication and division facts. ·        Identify and describe patterns in a multiplication chart. ·        Relate multiplication and division. ·        Pose and solve story problems using multiplication and division. ·        Write and solve equations. We use multiplication and division in many day-to-day situations. Encourage your child to practise the multiplication facts from 1 ´ 1 to 9 ´ 9. Talk with your child about the strategies you use to recall these facts. Here is an activity you can do at home: Multiplication Challenge Remove the jokers and face cards from a deck of playing cards. Shuffle the cards. Divide them into two equal piles. Keep 1 pile and give the other pile to your child. Each player turns over two cards and multiplies the numbers on the cards. An ace counts as 1. The player with the greater answer takes the cards. Continue playing until one player runs out of cards.
