We would like to extend a huge congratulations to Ethan Arbeau who was selected by the staff at Harkins Elementary as our 2013 Turn Around Achievement Award winner!  We couldn't be more proud of how he demonstrated that hard work and dedication to his academics will pay off.  Ethan has improved tremendously in all areas of his studies.  He is a super role model for the younger students and is a great Peer Helper as well.  Way to go Ethan!

I really can't believe that I just typed M-A-Y.  Is it really May already?  Where did the year go? With the month of May comes teachers' NBTA AGM which means no school for students on Thursday, May 2nd and as well on Friday, May 3rd due to our Subject Council Day.  Hopefully you enjoy your long weekend, of sunshine and relaxation. Monday we are starting our new novel read-aloud to Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.  The students voted and this was the hands down winner.  Tuesday and Wednesday they will be doing their archery again with Mr. Flynn and I will be giving them time to work on their Ancient Egypt presentations since there are only 8 school days before these are due.  I can't wait to see how they all turn out. I hope you enjoy your short week.  Work hard and get outside and enjoy this beautiful sunshine!

Yuck!  The snow on the weekend totally ruined my weekend.  I'm so glad to be back to see my wonderful students and this bright sunshine.  It is supposed to be a nice warm week and we have a great week ahead of us here. Monday, we will be finishing our Castle Diary and put the Middle Ages behind us.  We also have to finish our multiple intelligence test to see which way we learn best. We have our Spring Fling Dinner at the cafeteria on Wednesday.  For $4.50 you can get pizza, milk and ice cream, plus have the chance to win prizes.  We also have the Windham Chamber Singers coming to perform on Wednesday. Friday is a day off for students...enjoy your long weekend!

April showers, bring May flowers!  I can't wait for the month of May and the warmth that goes along with it.  It has been a long winter.  Anyone else ready for sunny days? This week we are finally back on schedule.  A full week without any days off.  We will be working hard to finish our Middle Ages presentations and starting our Ancient Egypt unit.  We were supposed to go to Croft, but it doesn't seem to be working out, but hopefully they can come here to see our presentations soon. We are going to get back to our Science now that our Social Studies projects are out of the way and the next ones aren't due until May 13th.  That gives us lots of time to get this unit finished up. We are going to continue our Humor Unit in Literacy and work hard with aspects of the CAFE so that we can build our reading comprehension, accuracy, fluency and expanded vocabulary.  Also don't forget to take your AR tests whenever you are finished a book. I hope you all have a great week.  On Friday we are halfway through the month of April.  It will be June before we know it!
I hope everyone had a super Easter holiday.  Everyone was deserving of a nice break.  This week is a short week!  Three full days.  It will fly by. The time has finally come that I can see the research projects that my students have completed for the Middle Ages.  I am very excited to see their first attempt at something so large.  Hopefully it wasn't too overwhelming for them as we will be starting into Ancient Egypt right after these are finished trying to get through all our units in such a limited amount of time. Don't forget that there is no school on Friday for Parent-Teacher interviews.  If you haven't already sent in your child's sheet requesting a time, please do so ASAP!  Enjoy your short week!

Wow!  It is almost Easter!  Who's excited?  I know I sure am!!! This week we will not be going to Croft on Monday.  With the Science Fair both schools are behind in their Social Studies so we will be going the Monday after Easter Monday.  Sorry about that. The book reports for the Door in the Wall are due at the end of the week.  As well, your Social Studies projects will be due on the Tuesday after Easter.  It gives you the Easter break to work on them.  We are starting our Humour Unit in language arts this week.  I'm excited for this change, and I am sure you are going to love it as well.  I can't wait to read all the good copies of your mystery stories that we have been working on for the past two months.  I am sure I will be very impressed! Don't forget that there is no school on Friday.  I am sure you won't forget!  Here's to a great week!

March 1st?  Really?  March 1st!  Crazy!!!!  It is March Break in one week.  What is on your agenda for the week?  We have to get this busy week in first. I have a surprise in store for Monday!  Gretna Green and Croft are coming to visit with us and we have a ton of Medieval projects in store, like looking at the St. Mary's church and seeing what middle ages aspects still exist.  Then we are going to do stain glass projects, and to finish it off, if we have time we are going to try and build a snow castle, with the bailey, the moat, and as many true to life castle features as possible. Tuesday is our popcorn ordering day and the last night to seek pledges for the Spellathon.  Remember this is our fundraiser for our class trip.  Please try and raise as much money as you possibly can because the more money we raise the more we can do and buy.  I want to make this the best year yet. The Spellathon test will be done in class on Wednesday in the morning.  In the afernoon we have a magician coming who will be doing it in french and english.  I can't wait to see how much you can understand in french. Thursday we will be working hard on the Science Fair.  Please come prepared to do so, because Friday is full of winter activities as this is our annual winter activity day.  As I said earlier...very, very busy week.  I hope you enjoy it and get well rested over the break to come prepared to work hard! Have a great week and great break!

As I sat down to write this message, I had to do a double take on what week we were in.  I couldn't believe that we were this close to the end of February!  Wow!  Scary!  On a brighter note, only 28 more days until spring! What a way to start off our week...a snow day!  Yay!  I hope you took the time to read even though it was a day off. Tuesday, we will be having a visitor from Croft join us and observe our class.  She is a new teacher and would like to see how the Daily Five and Social Studies run together at this grade level.  We will show her how smart and lovely our class is!  Wednesday is our day of French, which I love to return to once a week.  We can't lose all the hard work that we did over the last 4 months.  Who would like to go skating on Thursday?  I hope all of you, because Mr. Flynn will be taking the class to the rink in the morning before recess.  This will be our last tiime, so please come prepared for the day!  Finally it will be Friday and that brings our time to finish anything that we haven't finished over our week and work on our Science Fair projects.  Hopefully everyone remembers to bring in their white project boards! Enjoy the fresh fallen snow, and remember to always ask good questions!

Crazy how fast the time is going...it is going to be March Break before you know it!!! This week we will be continuing getting the english program up and running.  Hopefully we will be getting into some science experiments and fun activities that go along with this curriculum. You are going to be snowshoeing with Mr. Flynn in gym, so come prepared for the weather. Thursday is Valentine's Day!  How excited are we for that one?  Remember there are 25 students in the class and your class list is in your HEART book! Also, if you would like the Valentine's Meal it is $4.50 and has to be brought in by the 13th. Enjoy your week...only two more weeks until the big break!

Our first week of the Compacted Curriculum!  This also marks the fact that we are officially half-way through our school year and only four months until my students are middle schoolers.  Eeeeek! This week, we are going to be busy rolling out the english program and all the expectation that go along with it.  The students will be starting their AR testing which they do in middle school as well, and doing many tests in their reading and writing so I know where we are starting off at.  Hopefully they are as excited to start this new venture as I am. Thursday night we are excited to announce that we will be having our first Math Night here at the school from 6-7pm.  Hopefully you can all make it to this great night of numbers and facts! Enjoy your week...and your transition into the english program!

Why is the month of January always so long and cold?  We are almost through, thank goodness!  With the end of January comes our Provincial Testing however, so that is really our focus for the next week. Monday, I will be sending home the book orders and they are due on Thursday.  Tuesday is our day, as always, to order popcorn. We are very lucky to be going skating at the Civic Center on Thursday at 9:45 and then Friday is our Literacy Day.  We have a great week ahead of us and hopefully we will get lots of work done in preparation for our big test next week. Don't forget, Olivia, Abbigail and Ben have Show and Tell on Friday. Enjoy your week!

Welcome back to the first FULL week of school.  Last week was a blur getting back into routine, but hopefully this week will be back to normal. Monday, we will be full force into getting ready for our Provincial Test.  I can't believe it is that time of the year already, but I am confident that the students will do just fine. We will be working hard on preparation for this test for the next three weeks.  Oral and written testing will take place the first week of February.  A big Happy Birthday goes out to Chantal this week, who is celebrating her birthday on Thursday.  Have a great week folks!

I hope evveryone enjoyed their snow day Monday.  What a nice surprise.  Finally some snow for Christmas.  I didn't want to have a Green Christmas! This week we will be busy preparing for the Christmas concert.  As well, we will be continuing to talk, read and write about Christmas and start to watch some short children's movies to see if you can comprehend other people talking french.  Real francophones talk much faster than I do and it takes a trained ear to distinuish their words.  Hopefully this will be a success! One more week...hang in their.  Christmas will be here before we know it!

Three weeks left before Christmas break!  Only 13 school days left to practice for the Christmas Concert on December 19th...kind of nerve wrecking isn't it? This week is going to be a fun one.  Monday is Paddling at MVHS with Mr. Flynn, don't forget your maillot de bain and your towel for the big adventure.  Tuesday is our library day, and then Wednesday is our Christmas dinner in the cafeteria.  Please bring in your money for this before the 4th so that the cafeteria knows how many to plan for.  Your Scholastic Book orders are due in on Thursday and then on Friday we have our Welcome to Christmas Day where you can wear your favorite Christmas hat if you bring in an item for the food bank or if you bring in a dollar.  Pleas help support the food bank during this holiday season!  Also don't forget that on Friday Billy, Chris and Shania have Show and Tell. Here's to a great week!
