Well, it is nice to finially have a five day week! We are enjoying our time during Daily 5.  Students now choose Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading or Work On Writing during the two sessions.  I will introduce Word Work soon, which will make up the five parts.  This week in spelling we are reviewing the word families that we have taken so far this year.  It is good to stop for a week and go back to recheck what we have learned.  The students are getting very good at using the zoophonics signals to spell their words.  Have them teach you their favorites!!  A reminder that this Friday is Backward Day!  Remember that if you want to participate in this fun day you need to bring in an item for the food bank of a loonie!  Thanks so much for all the donations to date.  Our class is doing very well collecting. A few upcoming important dates: Nov. 21 - book order due, Nov. 25 - school colors day (blue and white), Nov. 29 - report cards go home, Dec. 1 - parent teacher 4pm-6pm, Dec. 2 - parent teacher 9am-12pm.

We have another short week ahead of us as there will be no school on Friday, Nobemver 11 due to the Remembrance Day holiday.  This week in spelling we will be studying the "ug" word family.  I am very pleased with the students progress during the Daily Five.  I have introduced the Work on Writing part and the students were all eager to take part.  A reminder that Thursday will be PJ Day.  Students can wear their pj's to school for the day if they bring in an item for the food bank of one loonie.  Everyone enjoyed Crazy Hat Day last week and our class brought in lots of items to donate.  The class who brings in the most wins a great prize, so let's keep up the great work!! The Remembrance Day assembly at Harkins will take place Wednesday, November 9 at 9:30am.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Crazy Hat Day!!  If you want to wear a hat you must bring in one item for the food bank or a loonie!  The Christmas season is approaching and we want to help teach our students to be giving, caring members of the community.  Check the memo that went home today for upcoming special days when we will be collecting other items.

We had a wonderful week in Grade One getting ready for Thanksgiving!  I'm sure all the parents enjoyed receiving their child's "handprint turkey" on Thursday.  Everyone did a great job and had lots of fun creating their masterpiece.  Next week the students will bring home their poetry journals for their reading.  Please allow your child to present a few different poems to you and your family each evening.  They have been working very hard on these and particularly love the Thanksgiving poems and songs.  I wish each of you a joyful Thanksgiving with your loving children!!  Enjoy being together :)   How wonderful it would be if we could help our children and grandchildren to learn thanksgiving at an early age. Thanksgiving opens the doors. It changes a child's personality. A child is resentful, negative—or thankful. Thankful children want to give, they radiate happiness, they draw people. -- Sir John Templeton

As you know, spelling has started this week.  You will find the sheet in the homework folder.  I have included the words for the next three weeks.  This week, we are focusing on words from the "ad family".  We will have a test on these words on Friday morning.  Please send the homework folders and books back on Friday. If you have not already done so I also ask that you send in the pink permission slip for field trips that was sent home.

We had a wonderful week together!  Our class has been working very hard on "building our stamina" during our Read to Self!  We are up to nine minutes and are excited that we may reach ten minutes in Monday!  Students know that the best way to become a better reader is simple - just read!  Each classroom is collecting spare change to be donated to the Terry Fox Foundation along with the pledges.  This will be happening all next week and we would appreciate any change you have!! Enjoy the weekend and happy First Day of Fall :)

We had a great first week of grade one!  The students are quickly getting back into the routine of school and everyone is doing well.  As you know I am teaching the class in the morning and Mrs. Pinder is teaching in the afternoon.  Please feel contact either of us if you have a question or concern.  Homework will be sent home on Mondays and we ask that you return it, completed, on Fridays.  There will be two books or their poetry journal sent home each week as well.  Please have your children read these to you.  I would also like to have an extra set of clothing for each child.  This would include pants, top, socks and underwear.  Kids often get wet on the playground or may spill something so it is much easier to have something at school that they can change into. That's all for now,   Mrs. Newman

We are excited that the month of May has arrived!  It means better weather and getting outside to play more often!!  Just a reminder that students still need indoor and outdoor shoes and should have a warm jacket on as the mornings are still cool!! This is a short week of school for the boys and girls.  Teachers have meetings both Thursday and Friday so I hope all my students enjoy their four day weekend :) Sunday, May 8 is Mother's Day!  I want to wish all Mothers a very special day with their little ones!

We had an exciting week in Grade One Newman! Keegan Fournier brought in his new puppy Princess!!  She is a miniature chihuahua and is only 3 months old.  All the students were very well behaved as we didn't want to scare Princess.  We all had a chance to pet her too and everyone was very gentle.  Good job boys and girls!! Williard McAllister was our class representative at the District 16 Spelling Bee on Friday!  He did a fantastic job and we were all very proud of him!  Way to go Willard!

We are now into the month of April and are enjoying the first days of Spring!  Our focus in math will be on our addition and subtraction facts to 20.  It is very important that everyone continues to review the facts we have learned and to use the strategies such as "Counting On" and "Counting Back".  In Literacy we will continue with our Guided Reading sessions focusing on fluency and comprehension.  It is necessary for all students to read the books at their level that are sent home each evening!!  The best way to become a better reader is simple.....JUST READ!!  We are also working hard during our Writing Workshop sessions creating wonderful stories!  We need to focus on being able to read back what we have written :)

We have read How The Grinch Stole Christmas and have done many different activites with this theme.  Today we wrote a letter to Mr. Grinch convincing him to love Christmas as much as we do!  Enjoy :)   Dear Mr. Grinch, We think you should love Christmas as much as we do.  We love getting presents.  We love celebrating Baby Jesus' birth.  We love to decorate the Christmas tree.   We love opening our stockings.  We love being with our friends and family.  We love giving presents to others.  We love playing in the snow.  We love to sing Christmas carols.   Love, Mrs. Newman's Grade One Class
