Our Guidance Counsellor, Mr. Murphy, was in our classroom Monday.  He explained to the class that this is Bullying Awareness Week.  He will be back in tomorrow to show us a video and introduce a related activity.  He would like as many students as possible to wear white Wednesday, November 17 in honour of this special week.

We will have a very busy five days of school this week!   Guided Reading has begun full force and the students are doing well working with their different activities.  They know the importance of the expression "work time is quiet time" and are beginning to follow it well!  Please make sure you read with your children.  The books they bring home on Monday should be read each evening by them.  It would also be very beneficial for you to read to your child.  Children love to be read to, regardless of their age.  It helps develop their fluency and the cuddle time is pricelss :) The "ot" word family will be introduced this week and the spelling words are in the homework duotang.  Please remember to send your child's homework back on Friday.

We will be going skating Monday morning.  Students must have skates and wear a helmet in order to go on the ice.  Tuesday we will be having our Remembrance Day ceremony at 9:30am.  Please note that there will not be any school Thursday due to Remembrance Day. A 100 chart will be sent home this week with the math homework.  Ask your child about the different activities we do with this chart.  They may use it to complete the math sheet in their duotang.  This chart will stay in their homework duotangs and used frequently throughout the year.  During math class we practice counting by 1's and 2's to 20, by 5's to 50 and by 10's to 100.  This would be a great activity for you to do with your child at home.  You will be amazed at how well they can do it!!

Just a reminder to parents that tomorrow, Friday, October 29 the only children eating in the cafeteria will be those who have ordered the Halloween dinner.  All others will be eating in their classroom.  No microwave will be available.  We now have 19 students in our class as a new boy arrived just recently. Children are to bring their costumes to school and will change into them after lunch.  Do not wear them to school in the morning.  We will also be going skating tomorrow morning from 8:45am-10:00am. Thanks and have a Spooktacular Halloween!!

We will have another busy week in 1 Newman!  Homework will go home again on Monday.  Please have your child concentrate on doing his or her best work at all times!  I focus on this in the classroom and believe the continuity at home will be of great benefit.  The children should review their spelling words each evening.  Having them use each word in a sentence will help their oral language skills.  This week we will work on words in the "at" family. In Math we will continue to work on the numbers to 20.  Counting from 1-20 forward and backward would be a great at home activity!  We will be celebrating Halloween this week with great stories, poems and songs.  We will be going skating Friday morning.  You will receive more information regarding this.  Don't forget that there is no school for the students on Wednesday, October 27 as teachers will be attending a Curriculum Implementation day.

Hello Everyone, Sorry for the late start, but I will now be posting on this page weekly.  As you know, I send homework home on Monday and ask that you send it back in on Friday. Even if they have completed the sheets, I ask that you still keep it home until Friday.  They need to review their spelling words each evening and read the books each evening as well.  Ask your child about our "Read-to-Self".  We are working on building up our stamina and hope to soon reach 10 minutes!!  Way to go boys and girls!!  The best way to become a better reader is simple.......just READ :)

Well, we have reached the 40th day of school.  The progress the students have made is amazing!!   I thoroughly enjoyed the two sessions of "Bring Your Parent to School" or Parent Teacher.  The students love to know that their Mom or Dad were in their classroom and to know that we work together as a team is always encouraging.   This coming week we will review the letters we have studied thus far and will start the letter Tt.  Remember that when your child is reviewing the letters in their letter bag you should be asking them what sound the letter makes along with what the letter is.
