The second Policy 409 consultation for parents was held on May 22nd, 2012 at Miramichi Valley High School. At this meeting, the following 3 recommendations were submitted:1. Build a new K-8 school to house students currently attending Croft Elementary, Harkins Elementary, Gretna Green Elementary and Harkins Middle. This school should be built to incorporate Early Childhood services. Close all existing schools.2. Build a new K-8 school to house students currently attending Croft Elementary, Harkins Elementary and Harkins Middle.

AIM (Adventures in Miramichi) will be holding summer camps again this year for students aged 11-15. Camp #1 will be held July 9-13; camp #2 will be held July 16-20. A reminder - as you know, the District 16 Education Council has begun the process to study the sustainability of Croft Elementary School, Gretna Green Elementary School, Harkins Elementary School, and Harkins Middle School, and held its first public consultation meeting on April 25, 2012.  This is in accordance with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Policy 409 – Multi-Year School Infrastructure Planning.

There are only 3 weeks left to sell tickets for the Home and School Re-do a Room contest! Any student who has sold tickets and brought in their money will have their name put in for a draw on May 11. This is a draw for a 50 dollar prize!   Remember, the draw for the winner of the fabulous Re-do a Room will take place on June 1.

The Miramichi Kinsmen and School District 16 are pleased to accept film entries for the second annual Kin Film Festival.  All School District 16 students are invited to participate.  Films can be submitted in one of two categories: Open and The Kinsmen Category (The Communities Greatest Need).  The top 10 films in each category will be screened on May 12th, 2012 at Miramichi Empire Studio 5.  Cash prizes of $500, $250 and $100 will be awarded for the winners in each category.

This spring Harkins Elementary will be having its first ever “Harkins Has Healthy Hearts” walking club. Each Tuesday at 4pm we as a school community will meet at different locations around the Miramichi and walk some of our beautiful trails. We are inviting all students, parents, friends, neighbors and staff to join us each week in joining us. Each walk will be approximately 40 minutes and will be at your own pace. All you need is a pair of sneakers and a bottle of water. A small nutrition snack will be provided at the end of each walk. April dates are:

There will be an information night on all second language program options includingthe Grades 3 and 6 Immersion programs as well as the Pre-Intensive, Intensive and Post Intensive programs on Wednesday, April 18th, at 6:30 p.m. at Dr. Losier Middle School.

The Just Kids at Harkins After School program is taking registrations for the 2012-13 school year. Registration forms can be picked up at the school and at the after-school rooms. Students from Harkins Elementary may register up to May 31. After that date, the registrations will be open to other students. Please note that all students must re-register for the next school year. Priority will be given to students who will be attending each day after school rather than on a part-time basis.
